Guitar Rez' Product of the Month is a Fender Masterbuilt Jazz Bass, made
by John English - one of Fender's most highly regarded senior
luthiers.
"This fine instrument represents the cream of the crop
from Fender's Custom Shop. Masterbuilt series instruments are
built from the ground up by one luthier, who has complete
control of every facet of construction, including the selection of
tone wood, choice of features/appointments, and the type of finish."
"This Masterbuilt Custom Shop Jazz Bass is built on an alder body
that is urethane finished in the cool, steely Viking Blue color. The
look is capped off by a striking brushed metal pickguard."
"The one piece satin finished maple neck has a slab style rosewood
fretboard and mother of pearl position marker dots. The scale is
34 inches. The shape is modeled after a 1975 Jazz, with a nut
width of a mere 1.5 inches. The tuners are high quality Schaller
open style machines with a Hipshot Drop-D tuner on the E-string
for instant tuning changes."
"From a sound standpoint, this John English Masterbuilt Jazz Bass
offers all the tones of the classic Jazz basses, and more! With the
active tone controls backed off a little more than half-way, the
has the tone of the classic vintage basses with passive
electronics. When you crank up the tone controls, the sounds of
more modern Fender style instruments come to life, with
thunderous bass and detailed high frequencies at the player's
command. The Fender Samarium-Cobalt Noisless (SCN)
pickups offer a wide range of tone, with none of the irritating
hum and buzz. The Fender American Deluxe bridge offers top-
loading, stringing or through body stringing so the player can
further customize the sound and feel of the bass.
The string-to-string and note-to-note response of this bass is very
even, with none of the "dead spots" normally associated with
vintage Fender basses."
